Food and Culture

There are different types of food in Singapore. All with a unique taste. My first dish that I like to eat is Roti Prata. It is not really a dish but it goes well with curry. Different ingredients can be put into a prata like banana, egg, cheese, sausage, just to name a few. It comes from the Indian cuisine. Indian cuisines normally include spicy dishes like a simple chicken curry to go along with the Roti Prata.

My next favorite dish is Carrot cake. This dish comes from the Chinese cuisine. Its very tasty and delicious. There are two types of carrot cake, black and white carrot cake. Black carrot cake has sweet dark soy sauce that gives it its dark colour, white carrot cake does not include the soy sauce. Both are nice to eat with chili paste. Lastly they put spring onions on top to add more flavour. Carrot cake is sold at most hawker centers and food courts.
My third favorite dish is Rojak. This dish comes from two cultures, Malay and Indian. But i am going to write about the malay rojak. Rojak consists of bite-sized dried tou-fu, fruits, vegetables, fried you tiao (dough fritters) and cured cuttlefish tossed in a prawn paste sauce topped with crushed peanuts. Grated bunga kantan (pink ginger buds) add a sensuous fragrance. It is a really nice dish. This dish results in a wild mix of sweet, spicy and sour flavour.
My last dish i like is Ice kachang. It is not a dish but it sure is a yummy dessert! Ice kachang is a colourful dessert that is shaped like a little mountain. It is decorated with colourful syrups, drizzled with milk, sweet corn, gula melaka and don't forget the brightly coloured syrups! Inside the ice shavings are little treasures hidden deep inside the little mountain. Examples like :colourful jelly, red beans and palm seeds. This dessert is very popular in Singapore as the weather here is quite warm and when it is, cold desserts cool us down. It sure is a mouth watering dessert to eat!
